Watch: The Chicago River Turns Green for the Famous St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Thousands of green-clad spectators gathered in downtown Chicago on Saturday for the grand annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

130 local plumbers painted the Chicago River a brilliant emerald green while other boats followed to mix it up. The people on the mixing boats are sponsors who paid to be there.

The Chicago tradition dates back to 1962, when local union members who used green paint to detect leaking pipes decided to dump 100 pounds of dye into the river. The paint stayed there for a whole week.

Since then, the event has become a regular event and draws thousands of people to downtown Chicago in all weathers.

What’s in the dye itself is “a closely guarded secret,” but it’s harmless to wildlife and lasts about five hours, according to FOX 32.

St. Patrick’s Day is Friday, March 17th.
