(CNN) – The San Francisco Supreme Court on Friday released video and audio recorded during last year’s attack on Paul Pelosi after a California court ruled that the district attorney’s office should release the materials.

One video shows body camera footage of officers who arrived at Pelosi’s home on October 28, 2022, when he was attacked. The footage shows the chaos of the moment when alleged assailant David DePape assaulted the husband of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

In the video, Paul Pelosi and DePape are holding a hammer, and DePape is holding Pelosi’s hand as the officers opened the door.

“Drop the hammer,” the officer says.

“Uh, no,” DePape replies.

DePape then grabbed the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and lunged at him. The officers broke into the house, grabbed DePape and handcuffed him.

CNN received a CD containing the files released by the court. In addition to body-camera footage, the files include audio of DePape’s police interrogation, Paul Pelosi’s 911 call made by Paul Pelosi while DePape was at the house, and video from home security cameras, the court previously said.

The videos were physical evidence at the preliminary hearing. The court’s decision to release the materials to the public comes after a petition by a coalition of news organizations, including CNN, alleging that circumstances surrounding the residence of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives require transparency.

DePape’s lawyers opposed the public release of the audio and video footage, writing that it would “irreparably damage” his right to a fair trial. DePape has pleaded not guilty to a number of state and federal offenses related to assault, including assault and attempted murder.

In October, Pelosi was brutally attacked with a hammer in the couple’s home by a man who was looking for the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, which ultimately led to Nancy Pelosi’s decision to step down as House Democratic leader, according to court documents.

Court documents showed that DePape allegedly woke up Paul Pelosi shortly after 2 a.m., carrying a large hammer and some white zip ties, and demanded, “Where’s Nancy? Where is Nancy? He then threatened to tie up Paul Pelosi and prevented him from escaping in an elevator, according to the documents. DePape later allegedly told him, “I can get you out.”

Paul Pelosi called 911 after convincing his assailant to let him go to the bathroom where his phone was charging and spoke cryptically to police.

After the attack, Paul Pelosi underwent surgery “to repair a fractured skull and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” spokesman Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

On Thursday, the Democratic congresswoman told reporters that her husband is recovering “day by day.”

“He has made some progress, but I think it will be at least another three months before he returns to normal, but prayers help a lot,” Pelosi said.

On Thursday, she told reporters that she had not seen the video of the incident and did not know if there would be.

“It would be very hard to see an encroachment on my husband’s life. But I do not know”.
