Wake County K9 accidentally shot and killed by Knightdale police on duty, Sheriff’s Office confirms.

In heartbreaking news out of North Carolina, K9 Deputy Santos was accidentally shot and killed in the line of duty early Friday morning. Santos was one of Wake County’s longest-serving K9 deputies, and his passing has left a deep void in the community.

The Knightdale Police Department and Wake County deputies were assisting each other on a search for a suspect who had fled the scene of a traffic stop. According to CBS affiliate WNCN, a passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Ravon Leshawn Williams, bolted from the car, leading police to establish a perimeter around the area.

During the search, a Knightdale police officer unintentionally fired their service weapon, causing a fatal wound to K9 Deputy Santos. Williams was later apprehended.

Santos was rushed to the North Carolina State University’s Veterinary Hospital emergency clinic, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The sheriff’s office paid tribute to him, stating, “He gave his life to ensure the safety of our deputies and the residents of Wake County.”

Santos had been with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office since 2016, making him the longest-serving member of the K9 team. Chief Capps released a statement expressing his condolences, saying, “We are truly heartbroken over this tragedy. All law enforcement officers understand the strong and undeniably special bond that exists between handlers and their K9 partners.”

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and the community is mourning the loss of a brave and dedicated member of the police force. Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas sent her condolences, saying, “Our hearts go out to the law enforcement community today, and our thoughts and prayers are with them in the days ahead as they grieve this tragic loss.”
