Viewers turn to News 6 Mental Health Phonebank

ORLANDO, Florida. – Mental health coverage this week in News 6 is just right.

Throughout Friday, a mental health phone bank hosted by News 6 and the Mental Health Foundation of Central Florida, sponsored by the Partnership Fund, listened to the Central Florida community.

Mental health professionals and phone bank volunteers said that for some of the hundreds of callers, the opportunity to express their feelings changed their day for the better.

Cassie Bressler was one of the phone bank volunteers. She said people called with all sorts of needs, some looking for support and others just wanting to speak up.

“Saying, ‘I hear you, I’m so sorry you’re going through (this),’ to some of them, that’s all they had to say, ‘You made my day so much better…'” Bressler said. “It can make a big difference in someone’s life. It could be a turning point for them.”

Cherlette McCullough, a psychiatrist, said it’s okay to ask for help.

“People don’t know where to start, and then once they know where to start, they just walk out with confidence,” McCullough said.

Despite the negative stigma, McCullough said that seeing a therapist can improve your life.

Seeking therapy as a preventative measure is better than waiting for a crisis, McCullough said, and the message is that we must recover together.

“I truly believe that if people in our community are suffering mentally, they will not be healthy physically,” McCullough said. “They won’t thrive, and if individuals in our community don’t thrive as a whole, we can’t thrive.”
