US CBP Opens New Temporary Processing Facility in El Paso Following President Biden’s Visit

According to the US Customs and Border Protection, the purpose of the facility is “to safely and quickly process individuals in the custody of US Border Patrol.”

EL PASO, Texas — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Wednesday announced the opening of a “soft” facility in El Paso.

According to the CBP, the purpose of the facility is “the safe and expeditious processing of persons in U.S. Border Protection custody.”

The new 1,000-person facility will reportedly complement the agency’s central processing facility opened at El Paso’s Hondo Pass in 2020. The city was chosen as the location for the feature because of the frontier sector stations in West Texas and New Mexico. .

The CBP announcement came shortly after President Joe Biden’s visit to the border town. Biden’s office said he would “evaluate border security operations and meet with local elected officials and community leaders who have been important partners in managing the historic numbers of migrants fleeing political oppression and gang violence.”

In El Paso, President Biden toured the Americas Port of Entry Bridge that connects El Paso to Ciudad Juarez for tourists and commercial trade. The President also visited the El Paso County Migrant Service Center. President Biden was joined by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Majorcas and lawmakers.

Gov. Greg Abbott was also there, welcoming the president to the airfield and handing him a letter. Abbott’s letter argued that President Biden’s border policies had resulted in an influx of migrants and demanded that the president take stricter measures on the US-Mexico border.

On January 5, President Biden announced new border rules. He said the US will start turning away people migrating from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who cross the border without papers.

Instead, the US will allow 30,000 migrants from these four countries per month if they apply from their home country and have someone in the US to provide them with economic support. Those who enter under the new conditions will be allowed to enter and work legally for up to two years.
