University of Texas blocks TikTok on its Wi-Fi and wired networks, devices

The University of Texas at Austin announced today that it is blocking TikTok on its Wi-Fi and wired networks and devices.

In a letter to students first reported by the Texas Tribune, UT said, “The University of Texas at Austin is taking steps to comply with Governor Greg Abbott’s Dec. 7 directive to all state agencies to mitigate cybersecurity risks associated with TikTok.”

The letter states that UT has already begun the process of removing TikTok from all government devices and has banned its use on its networks.

Jeff Neyland, Technology Strategy Adviser to the President of UT, said: “As outlined in the Governor’s directive, TikTok collects vast amounts of data from its users’ devices, including when, where and how they are online, and offers this treasure trove of data. potentially sensitive information to the Chinese government.”

Neiland said that blocking TikTok would help eliminate risks to the information contained on the university’s network and to its infrastructure.

When Gov. Abbott issued a directive directing all Texas agencies to ban TikTok, he also said he wanted legislation to make the directive permanent.
