University of Massachusetts Sounds Alarm Over TikTok Drinking Trend After Nearly 30 Students Are Hospitalized

The University of Massachusetts is sounding the alarm about Drinking Trend on TikTok after about 30 college students were reportedly rushed to the hospital from off-campus parties ahead of St. Patrick’s Day.

Students were seen Saturday carrying jugs of a mixture of alcohol, electrolytes, flavors and water dubbed “blackout rage gallons” or “BORGs” in reference to the drinking trend gaining momentum on TikTok, officials said.

Reports say 28 ambulances were called to off-campus parties. There were so many ambulance calls for drunken students, officials said, that nearby agencies stepped in to help.

The Amherst Fire Department said none of the cases were life-threatening. UMass officials said this is the first time the university has seen widespread use of BORG at off-campus parties.

WHAT IS “BORG”? Hangover Protection

Amherst Police and Massachusetts Police reported two arrests for underage drinking, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette. According to the publication, the hashtag #borg has gained more than 74.7 million views on TikTok. He has been featured on the Chinese social media platform since at least 2020.

Poison Control reports that “BORG”, which is an enclosed container carried by individual students at parties, has been praised by some for preventing the spread of infectious diseases as well as reducing alcohol consumption.

Since the trend includes adding electrolytes to the drink, some believe it reduces hangovers.

However, BORGs, which typically contain a fifth of vodka, can still cause alcohol poisoning even if consumed within hours, experts warn.

In a statement university said weekend events will be evaluated and steps will be taken to improve alcohol education. Incoming students are already learning about the physiological and medical risks of heavy drinking.

The weekend festivities are known among UMass students as the “Blarney Blowout”, an annual unsanctioned event associated with upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day, reported by local media.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the university and the fire department for additional comment.
