Understanding the world of artificial intelligence and its future implications

ORLANDO, Florida. – Many films have been made about the rise of robots, trying to show the world what artificial intelligence or AI might look like in the future.

However, today we are surrounded by AI, which is much more mundane thanI am a robot or the HAL 9000 computer depicted in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Your social media feed, voice-to-text, and a robot vacuum cleaning your floors are all examples of modern artificial intelligence.

However, the rapid growth of a new AI application called ChatGPT has created both hope and fear about the potential impact of AI on humanity, given its ability to write and respond in a human way.

Dr. Rebecca Leis, director of the computer science program at Full Sail University, spoke with host Justin Wormot on The Weekly to help us better understand the world of AI.

“Artificial intelligence is essentially a way for machines to mimic human behavior,” Lace said. “There are usually two different categories of artificial intelligence: narrow AI and general AI. Narrow AI focuses on one task or a set of very specific tasks, while general AI can do pretty much the same as a human. Narrow AI is something like self-driving cars where they will detect lane lines and try to figure out if there is a pedestrian on the street. The overall AI is similar to Star Trek data.

Lace also discussed how AI could impact society in the future, the curriculum for AI students at Full Sail University, and whether she believes it poses a threat to humanity.
