U.S. Congressman Tony Gonzalez disagrees with Texas GOP condemnation

Eagle Pass, Texas — Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-District 23) led a congressional delegation to the border at Eagle Pass on Monday, two days after he was denounced by the Texas Republican Party.

“After all, I will be rolling up my sleeves every single day, and anyone who wants to challenge me will be a stupid idea. I will drive you into the abyss and drown you every time, so I welcome it, ”said Gonzalez.

On Saturday, the Texas GOP voted 57 to 5 in favor of the censure, with one abstention. They cited a lack of loyalty to Republican principles and priorities.

The censure is a formal disapproval that deprives Gonzalez of public GOP funds and dissuades him from running as a Republican in the runoff primaries. Penalties expire on May 28, 2024, the date of the first round.

“Listen, there are people who like you. There are people who don’t like you. I served 20 years in the army. I learned a long time ago that you can’t please everyone and you shouldn’t try,” Gonzalez said. “You must be firm in who you are and you must fight for what you believe in.”

Gonzalez voted against the GOP majority on several issues. He was for modest gun reform after the Uvalda shooting, for same-sex marriage, was the only Republican to vote against a Republican rule package in the House of Representatives, and disagreed with fellow Texas Republican Chip Roy’s border security measures.

Gonzalez brought lawmakers from Florida, Indiana and Guam to the border at Eagle Pass to deal with current issues. The trip included meetings with local law enforcement, US Border Patrol and Customs, and agricultural stakeholders.
