U-Haul hits several pedestrians in NYC, suspect detained after being surrounded by police

Police stopped a U-Haul truck and detained the driver after reports that the vehicle ran over several pedestrians in New York on Monday.

Authorities said the truck driver fled the scene by climbing onto a sidewalk in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood and injuring several people.

Police stopped a truck near the entrance to a tunnel leading from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Details were not immediately available.

The incident coincided with the start of the death penalty phase in the trial of Saifullo Saipov, an Islamic extremist who in 2017 killed eight people by hitting them with a truck.

It was unclear if the two events were related.
