Two suspects arrested after attempted robbery of US Postal Service employees

BOYNTON BEACH, Florida — U.S. Postal Inspector Blanca Alvarez said two people arrested on Wednesday after they attempted to rob several US Postal Service employees in Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Alvarez said they are now questioning the suspects to determine if they are connected to a string of check-washing incidents in Palm Beach County.

“Usually they want to steal mail because they want to take away valuables,” Alvarez said. “It could be gift cards, it could be cash, it could be something in the mail with someone’s personal information.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Theron Bethel and Tyra Bethel were arrested by US marshals after a car chase in Boca Raton.

Blanca Alvarez explains why scammers often try to rob postal workers.

Alvarez said the suspects tried to rob the postman of his keys in Boynton Beach around 11 a.m.

In the hours that followed, they attempted to steal mailbox keys from three additional carriers elsewhere in Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek, and Boca Raton.

“Never before has this happened when all these robberies took place in the same area right after the other,” Alvarez said.

As soon as the police found the vehicle they believed was involved, the suspects gave chase. Boynton Beach police said the chase ended up in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant in Boca Raton.

Alvarez asked anyone with information about these robberies to call the US Postal Inspectorate at 877-876-2455.

The US Postal Service is urging people not to leave mail in their mailbox overnight.
