Two firefighters are still in the hospital days after a wind-blown Staten Island fire injured 22 people

The FDNY has confirmed that one of three firefighters seriously injured in the Staten Island fire on Friday afternoon was discharged from the hospital over the weekend.

A total of 22 firefighters from the department were injured after a fire broke out in the back of a duplex in Arden Heights, triggering a fourth alert and collapse, officials said Friday.

Two other FDNY members hospitalized with serious injuries are still in Staten Island University Hospital, a department spokesman said Sunday.

The FDNY says the call about the Shotwell Avenue fire came in around 1:30 p.m. Friday. Flames engulfed a nearby door and the collapse of the rear of the structure was reported as additional support was called.

“Because the firefighters were inside looking for people, the windows fell out and the wind blew the fire hard into the building, right on the firefighters,” Department Chief John Hodgens said at a news conference at Staten Island University Hospital.

Two of them were trapped, and one escaped from the balcony. Another carried a distress signal to the 2nd floor, where he was rescued. The third seriously injured firefighter, a nozzle man, lost his bearings when he was hit on the head with something, knocking off his gas mask and causing him to inhale smoke, according to Hodgens.

All injured participants are expected to survive. The doctors said they were on alert and were “joking”.

Footage from behind the house shows that the residence is completely destroyed, which is a complete loss for the family living inside.

One person inside the house was able to evacuate safely without injury; no one else was at home.

It’s unclear what caused the fire, which has grown to four alarms, but FDNY officials say they believe the blaze started at the back of a home between two houses.

An investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
