Trenton Firefighters Quell Autobody Shop Fire

TRENTON (Mercer) – A courageous firefighter sustained injuries while valiantly combating a fierce blaze that engulfed an autobody shop on the evening of Halloween (Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023). The alarming situation unfolded shortly before 5:35 p.m., when the first of numerous 911 calls flooded in, alerting authorities to a raging fire in the vicinity of the 500 block of South Broad Street. Responding promptly to the distressing reports, Engines 3, 10, and 7, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, and Battalion 1 were swiftly dispatched to the scene. In light of the escalating emergency, the response was instantaneously upgraded to an “All Hands” operation, prompting the immediate deployment of additional units from Engine 1, Ladder 4, Special Services 1, and Battalion 7. However, en route to their original destination, the responding firefighters were redirected to 224 Furman Street, where they encountered billowing smoke emanating from the roof of R&R Auto Body.
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the courageous firefighting crews promptly mobilized a formidable 2.5-inch hoseline. With utmost bravery, they forced entry into the blazing structure, only to be met with a relentless inferno within. Despite the daunting challenge, the intrepid firefighters tenaciously battled the flames, effectively suppressing the majority of the fire in a remarkably swift manner. However, the official declaration of the fire being under control was not announced until 6:01 p.m., emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the heroic efforts of the firefighting teams.
Regrettably, amidst the arduous firefighting operation, one valiant firefighter suffered a distressing laceration. In light of the severity of the injury, the firefighter was promptly transported to the hospital under the expert care of Trenton EMS.
