Tragic Loss in Trenton High-Rise Fire Claims One Life

TRENTON (Mercer) – A devastating two-alarm fire that engulfed the Trent Center West high-rise apartment building on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2, 2023) has claimed the life of one individual. Michelle Miller, aged 51, tragically succumbed to severe smoke inhalation suffered during the harrowing ordeal, according to Detective Lt. Brian Jones of the Trenton Police Department. Miller, who was rescued from the ferocious blaze, passed away earlier this week while receiving treatment at a local hospital, as reported by MidJersey News.

Detective Lt. Jones, serving as the public information officer for the Trenton Police Department, confirmed that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. However, he reassured the public that foul play is not suspected. The incident occurred at the 15-story building located at 465 Greenwood Avenue. The initial distress call was received at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Saturday, when flames first erupted in an apartment on the building’s ground floor. Although firefighters promptly extinguished the inferno, dense smoke permeated hallways and stairwells, reaching all the way to the top floor.

Courageous firefighters valiantly conducted numerous rescues and successfully evacuated a multitude of elderly residents, ensuring their safety. Fortunately, none of the evacuated individuals sustained injuries. Emergency medical services personnel from Trenton and nearby towns promptly arrived at the scene, swiftly transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Some of the victims were in critical condition at the time of their evacuation. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora shared via a heartfelt Facebook post that a total of eight people were transported to hospitals, while two firefighters sustained injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed the current conditions of the remaining victims.
