Toms River Resident Faces Charges Following 100-Mile Pursuit Across Central Jersey Towns

Howell Township, New Jersey – In a recent incident on the evening of November 11th, 2023, Howell Township patrol units swiftly responded to Longhorn Steakhouse after receiving reports of a disorderly individual causing a disturbance within the establishment. The restaurant staff described the male as erratic and confrontational, expressing uncertainty as to whether he was under the influence of narcotics or alcohol. Upon the arrival of the patrol units, the subject, identified as 38-year-old Zachariah Hartman from Toms River, attempted to flee the scene and in doing so, collided with a police cruiser. As the pursuit ensued through Howell Township, Hartman’s desperate escape saw him collide with two additional Howell police cruisers, rendering one of them inoperable.

Undeterred by the ongoing chase, Hartman continued his reckless path, leading the police through various municipalities, including Lakewood Township, Jackson Township, Freehold Township, Freehold Borough, Millstone Township, Plumstead Township, and Colts Neck Township. The pursuit, which spanned over 100 miles, lasted for an astonishing duration of more than two hours. Eventually, law enforcement successfully apprehended Hartman in Jackson Township without any further incident.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of this extensive pursuit, which could have potentially endangered the lives of innocent bystanders and law enforcement personnel. In light of his actions, Hartman now faces multiple criminal charges, including two counts of eluding, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of obstruction. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Monmouth County Correctional Institute, where he awaits his detention hearing.
