There is something lucky about this place, as Tom Petty once said in his song about his beloved Malibu beach house — which is now hitting the market five years after his death.
Made up of three bedrooms and four baths, the oceanfront property asks $9.85 million.
Spanning 1,170 square feet, Petty bought it in 2010 for $6.8 million, records show.
“Tommy loved that the beach house was pretty much all original, built in 1950, with a cabin feel,” Petty’s widow, Dana Petty, said in a statement. “We spent a lot of time there with friends and family.”
“Tommy always had his recorder and guitar, as he was always writing and creating. I remember him writing so many songs there,” Dana added. “Three that come to mind are Good Things Coming and Mudcrutch song’s Beautiful Blue and Topanga Cowgirl. Good times.”

Boasting 66 feet of oceanfront views, the cabin-like abode is built with wood, brick and stone, according to the listing. It also comes with a separate guest house.
That guest house was used as a studio when Petty lived there.
Other features include a floor-to-ceiling brick chimneypieces, a wall of glass on one side of the living room that opens to the ocean-view deck and a separate formal dining room with library shelving.
The home’s two bedrooms include a primary suite with a tiled fireplace, a walk-in closet, an ocean-view bath and a private beachfront deck.
A stairway in the living room leads to the lower level, where there is an expansive family/media/office/recreation room, the listing adds.
Chris Cortazzo with Compass holds the listing.
“When Tom first walked into the home, he just loved the essence and the spirit,” Cortazzo told The Post. “He loved its originality — it was unpretentious which was very much his spirit. Every holiday was celebrated there. What a luxury for a massive celebrity to walk on the beach and not be bothered.”
Petty died on Oct. 2, 2017 after falling unconscious several days prior. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled that Petty had died of “multi-system organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity.”
