Today, the results of a vote of no confidence in the head of the fire department of Apopka are expected.

APOPKA, Florida. – On Wednesday, the Apopka City Council will hear the results of a vote of no confidence in the Apopka Fire Chief over the death of a firefighter.

The Apopka Firemen’s Union is expected to present its findings.

Since the death of 25-year-old Austin Duran, the union has voiced concerns about safety and training protocol. Chief Sean Whelam was criticized for not doing enough to improve.

Duran died last year from injuries sustained after a heavy trailer filled with sand fell on him while working. The trailer is used to prevent hazards such as liquid and gas spills.

A report from the state fire marshal later spoke of a lack of training.

Austin Duran’s father – Michael Duran – believes that insufficient preparation was a decisive factor in the death of his son.

“If (Austin Duran) had been training, Austin would still be here today,” Michael Duran said. “Absolutely zero question: he will be here.”

Last July, Wylam said he was unaware of any problems in the department regarding safety and training and was stunned by criticism from the city council.
