Three Arrested, Two Police Officers Attacked at Times Square Protests Over Tyre Nichols Death: NYPD

Three people have been arrested and two police officers attacked during protests in New York over the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police officers, NYPD officials said Saturday.

All three arrests took place near Seventh Avenue and 43rd Street in Midtown around 8:15 p.m. Friday, when one of the protesters jumped on the hood of an NYPD police car that was idling and kicked the windshield.

Police arrested a 33-year-old windshield attacker named Argenis Rivera, accusing him of criminal hooliganism. A second protester, 34-year-old Katherine Stone, was also captured for attempting to graffiti the same cruiser.

When the cops came in to arrest Rivera, 25-year-old protester Candy Nicole tried to push them away by punching two cops in the face as she tried to stop the arrest, police said.

Police arrested her for assault as a hate crime for making statements against police officers when she punched one of the police officers in the nose. None of the police officers were seriously injured.

Rivera and Nicole’s indictments in Manhattan Criminal Court were expected on Saturday. Stone was given a turnout report and is expected to answer the allegations in court next month.

More than 100 protesters turned out for two protests in Times Square and Union Square on Friday night as a horrifying video was released showing Tyre Nichols being fatally beaten by five black Memphis police officers.

All five officers were fired and charged with murder before the video was released.

The three arrested Friday night were among Union Square protesters who began marching north along Seventh Avenue, police said.

“The only way to get through this is unity – I’m not talking about this humbai unity,” a man with a loudspeaker said at a protest in Union Square. “I’m talking about this kind of ‘if they fuck with us, we fuck’ type of unity.”

Protesters in Times Square blocked traffic on Broadway, heading to Pennsylvania Station.

Both protests ended before 23:00.

NYPD braced for “strong protests” in the city on Friday when the video was released. City police officers have been asked to remain on duty rather than close at the end of their shift, and each precinct has been tasked with dedicating a sergeant and eight officers in riot gear in case protests surge.

“In the coming days, we will have a heightened police presence to ensure that people who choose to can express themselves freely and safely,” This was announced by Police Commissioner Kichant Sewell on Twitter..

“Our duty is to protect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest. While we understand, appreciate and share the high emotional content of this tragedy, our Department will never tolerate violence, deliberate destruction or any other crime,” Sewell said.

New protests are planned for the weekend in five districts.
