This is why there will be no red carpet at the Oscars this year

The hues have changed over the years, but the Oscars red carpet has always been red for the past six decades…until now.

LOS ANGELES. Much has changed at the Oscars over the years, but over the past six decades, at least one constant has remained the same: the red carpet. The hues have changed over the years, but it has always been some shade of red. Until this year.

Workers unrolled a champagne-colored carpet outside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Wednesday as Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, chaired the event.

“I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet over the red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed,” Kimmel said.

The decision to change the color was made by creative consultants Lisa Love, longtime Vogue contributor, and Raul Avila, creative director of the glamorous Met Gala in New York.

The carpet will be covered this year, in part to protect the stars and cameras from the weather, but also to help turn the arrival into an evening event. For Love, there has always been a discrepancy between the smart black tie dress code and the fact that people come to take pictures in daylight, at noon. With indoor carpet, they could change that.

“We turned a day event into a night event,” Love told The Associated Press. “It’s evening now, although it’s still three hours.”

The Oscars red carpet dates back to 1961, when the 33rd Academy Awards were held at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, when Billy Wilder’s The Apartment won Best Picture, Burt Lancaster and Elizabeth Taylor won Best Picture. starring roles, and there was also a “youth award” that went to Hayley Mills for Pollyanna. It was the first ceremony to be televised on ABC and hosted by Bob Hope. The general public did not see the red carpet in all its glory on television until 1966, when the Academy Awards were first broadcast in color.

According to Love, there has been no debate about this change. They just knew they had the freedom to break with tradition. They tried other colors too, but they seemed too dark with the covered tent. “We chose this beautiful color of sienna, saffron, which is reminiscent of a sunset because it’s the sunset before the golden hour,” Love said.

Instead, they got lighter, and Academy CEO Bill Kramer approved them.

They also didn’t particularly worry about upsetting Oscar traditionalists.

“Someone always has a way of finding something wrong with something,” Love said. “It’s just lightness and I hope people like it. This does not mean that the carpet will always be the color of champagne.”

As for how should we call it? Love said “champagne” and “sand” are appropriate descriptions, but there’s no reason not to use “red carpet” as the default. This is more a metonym for glamorous visits than a literal description of what everyone walks on.

The red carpet for the 95th Academy Awards opens Sunday at 3:30 pm EST. The ceremony will begin at 20:00 and will be broadcast live on ABC.
