This is why it was so hot in Central Florida, why it will continue to be like this

ORLANDO, Florida. The weather all over the country was crazy last week. Record warm weather in the South and Mid-Atlantic. Record cold weather in the West.

Although extreme, this weather pattern is consistent with what is typically seen in La Niña during the winter.

Winter in the La Niña regime is often characterized by warmer and drier conditions than usual in the southern and southeastern United States.

La Niña

During La Niña, the season’s most severe weather in terms of winter weather is typically concentrated from the western Great Lakes region to the northern plains and Pacific Northwest.

The hallmark of the La Niña pattern is the subtropical ridge, which usually rises above the extreme southwest of the Atlantic and Caribbean.

Top level pattern

These systems not only help to remove cold and moisture to the north, but also are a source of heat. Areas affected by these weather patterns are hot and dry. The high pressure causes the air to sink. As the air descends, it heats up and dries out.

looking ahead

Despite a slight decline for the week ahead, this chunk of high pressure will remain anchored in the Caribbean and Southwest Atlantic, keeping temperatures well above normal in the southeast through the first week of March.

This will negate the chance of rain in Florida for most, if not all, of the working week.

All active weather will initially continue west of the Rocky Mountains and move up and over the high pressure area over the course of the week. A large sinkhole in the jet stream brings a historic blizzard to the mountains near Los Angeles.

A rare blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the mountains of Southern California.

Thank you @gdimeweather for finding the blizzard warning we issued on February 4, 1989. Here is a special weather statement. It appears to have been released after the reports came in. Even if this is not our first storm, it is a dangerous storm. Do not travel in the mountains on Friday and Saturday. #kavks #LARain pic.twitter.com/jINqMIwHSH

This storm will move to the plains on Sunday evening, creating a risk of severe weather early Monday morning. As this storm moves eastward from coast to coast, it could bring the season’s heaviest snowfall to coastal regions in the northeast.
