This Bushwick tea lounge turns into a nightclub after dark.

In a vast corner space that until recently was home to a glass window wholesaler – at Bushwick Junction, which still feels industrial and gritty – a new slash-and-dine eatery has quietly been feeding and entertaining guests since February.

The Red Pavilion’s grand opening won’t be until March 14th, but since last month, the new mixed-use establishment (pharmacy by day, Asian noir nightclub after dark, and Sunday brunch spot) has been quietly preparing for its grand debut.

“I’d love to put on some really smoky, opium, sexy cabaret-style venue, but we wanted some place where people could go to relax,” co-founder Shin Lee told The Post of the decision not to do The Red Pavilion was a place where visitors felt pressured to “put on red lipstick and dress up, but in a more playful, fun concept.”

Li, a Taipei-born nightlife producer who also runs an entertainment agency, teamed up with registered dietitian, traditional Chinese medicine chef and Shanghai native Zoe Xinyi Gong to unveil the multifaceted concept.

The aesthetic is: “David Lynch Meets Wong Kar-Wai,” the latter of whom is a Hong Kong filmmaker known for his intense cinematography and non-linear storytelling. The atmosphere should be both authentic and kitsch, accessible and community oriented.

Visiting his teahouse, guests at 1241 Flushing Ave. 2,400 square feet can enjoy traditional Chinese medicine-inspired tea and a health-focused menu including multi-grain congee, black sesame latte, and snow mushroom stew from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

In the evening, neon and smoke machines are turned on for a variety of theatrical programs, from jazz evenings and aerial gymnasts to Japanese shibari rope bondage, hanging from hooks and other shows with a fetishistic accent and a focus on costumes.

The drinks menu features Chinese shamanistic drinks and herbal shots, including a $17 sesame colada (tequila, wolfberry baijiu, caramelized pineapple, mangosteen, and white sesame paste) and $12 Awakening (whiskey and baijiu, infused hand of the Buddha and blueberries). ).

Then, on Sundays, from noon to 15:00, dim sum.

“You know, there are places in Williamsburg where they say they have dim sum, which is fine, but it’s not traditional dim sum,” Lee said. “We’re actually pushing a cart.”

There will also be a completed order form, and Gong herself plans to push the cart, Eater said.

While the Red Pavilion is intended to be a unique union of various pleasures, its entertainment offerings have been heavily inspired by a combination of recent events.

“The concept really came about during COVID when everyone was very divided and of course a lot [anti-Asian] there have been hate crimes in our community,” said Lee, who herself was the victim of a subway attack.

Lee and Gong, who had both lived in Bushwick for several years (Lee had spent seven or so years in Williamsburg prior to this), felt that the area, while full of delicious Asian food, lacked space for Asian and Pacific island communities.

At the Red Pavilion, they plan to “actually give a stage” and highlight Asian artists, “show culture through food, tea and performance.”
