Third Ward Community Says They Need More Solutions to Growing Deadly Trouble

The Third Ward community says they need more solutions to the growing deadly nuisance.

“When the sun goes down, everything changes,” said Brandi Lightfoot.

Lightfoot is the public relations director for Generation One, a nonprofit organization that helps prepare children in Cooney’s homes for kindergarten.

“There is nowhere for us to buy anything decent for lunch,” she said.

Lightfoot says she is uncomfortable walking around the Scott Food Mart on Winbern and Tierwester Street. On Tuesday, one man was found shot to death and another wounded outside the store.

“I think it’s not just a center for crime, but for drugs and drug trafficking and all that stuff,” Lightfoot said.

The KPRC conveyed residents’ concerns to District D Councilwoman Caroline Evans-Shabazz.

Evans-Shabazz says he’s going to contact Houston police to make sure there’s an alert in the area, which means patrols will be stepped up.

The council member says they are also working on a project to bring more fresh produce to the area.

“Maybe it will be something with the food bank,” she added. “We can help them get not just fresh food, but free food.”

She says they are currently looking for a location for the program and hope to launch it in the coming months.

“We want everyone to be happy, healthy and safe,” she said.
