Things to do this week: Free Skating, NYU Club Fest, Student Film Festival.

The Daybook is WSN’s weekly column listing in-person and online events at NYU and in New York City. This week: January 30 – February. five.

MondayScreening of Shyamalan’s action film “Knock on the Shack”.

19:00-21:00, AMC 19th Street, 890 Broadway.

Attend a pre-release screening of Knock on the Shack, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, hosted by the NYU Program Council. The film is about a family taken hostage by a group of strangers who then must decide whether one of the family members should sacrifice their life to prevent the apocalypse. Students can register for free tickets through NYU Engage.

Free skating at the Wollman Rink

18:00-22:00 at 830 Fifth Ave.

Enjoy an evening of ice skating at the Wollman Rink in Central Park as part of the NYU Interresidential Hall Council’s Flurry event. A photo booth, snacks, and free skate rentals will be provided to members of the NYU community. Registration required. You don’t have to live in a hostel to participate.

Listen to contemporary jazz at Blue Note.

20:00 at the Blue Note Jazz Club.

Acclaimed trumpeter, producer and songwriter Keyon Harrold will perform at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village. Harrold has previously worked with a wide range of music artists including Jay Z, Rihanna and Snoop Dogg. Admission prices start at around $29 per person for a bar table (over 21s only) and around $40 per table. Places are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

Tuesday

A cinematic history of calypso music and juice

4:30 pm at the Museum of Modern Art.

Watch the documentary “One Hand Don’t Clap” directed by Kaveri Datta Kaula about calypso music and its history, narrated by two singers from Trinidad and Tobago. Datta Kaul will present the film as part of the 19th annual MoMA International Film Conservation Festival, an annual festival dedicated to films that have been preserved and restored. Tickets start at $12 for the general public and $8 for students.

Decorate your living space with handmade decorations

6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Kimmel Center for University Life, rooms 405 and 406.

Create decorations for your dorm, apartment, or other living space to spice up empty walls in “DIY Dorm Deco”. The Arts Committee of the New York University Program Council is sponsoring this event. Students must register on the NYU Engage website to participate.

Wednesday

Discover University Life at NYU Club Fest

13:00-17:00 at the Kimmel Center for University Life.

Visit the NYU Club Festival to learn more about ways to get involved on campus. Recommended organizations will include fraternities and sororities, sports clubs, and multicultural groups. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions to current club members and join organizations. Students can answer questions through NYU Engage.

See NYU Tisch students in “Queens”

20:00-23:00, Second Avenue, 111, 3rd floor

Visit the Atlas Theater to see Queens, a play about the lives of a group of immigrant women living in Queens, directed by the 2023 Tisch School of the Arts alumni. The show is directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martina. Maiock and director Thea Alagic, a world famous director. Tickets for regular viewers start at $10, and tickets for students start at $5. Performances will run until February 6.

Thursday

Immerse yourself in the spectacle of ice skating

6:30 pm, 830 Fifth Avenue.

Watch skaters glide across the ice during the New York Ice Theater’s winter skate program at the iconic Wallman Rink in Central Park. Featuring duets as well as solo performances, as well as contemporary and classical music, ITNY and their skaters have received international recognition for their excellence. Tickets start at $50.

Watch films about studying abroad at the student festival

18:00–20:00, 721 Broadway, room 670.

Join alumni of Tisch Special Programs and three study-abroad programs open to Tisch majors – Experimental Production Workshop in Paris, 35mm Filmmaking in Prague, and 35mm Visual Storytelling at FAMU in Prague – to screen student films produced during the programs . The screenings will be followed by a short Q&A session with the filmmakers. RSVP is required to participate.

Friday

Multiverse Journey at Lincoln Center

18:00 at 165 W. 65th St.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, will perform at the Lincoln Center Film Festival Jumping Poems with Daniels, a series celebrating the work of both directors. This new week-long series features a collection of films that inspired them, including The Swiss Army Man and The Death of Dick Long. The series will feature contemporary classics including The Matrix, Princess Mononoke and Chasing Kung Fu. Tickets are $17 for general admission and $14 for students.

Find vintage treasures in a timeless exhibition

Noon at 125 W. 18th St.

Nearly 100 vendors of vintage clothing, jewelry, accessories and textiles will showcase their wares at the Manhattan Vintage Show, New York’s largest. Visitors can explore fashion from the 19th century to the present day. The show will be open for two days starting February 3rd. Standard admission tickets start at $20, although students can purchase a one-day ticket online for $15.

Saturday

Watch Tisch’s Airline Highway.

2:00 pm at 111 Second Avenue.

Join the Tisch School of the Arts Graduation in the 2023 production of Airline Highway by Lisa D’Amour, an American playwright who has been Pulitzer Prize finalist for the play Detroit. The production focuses on the celebration of Mardi Gras at the Hummingbird Motel, a fictional hotel located off the highway of New Orleans. Tickets must be reserved at least two hours before the start of the show and cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students.

Brooklyn Crafts Shop in Pop-Up Market

5:00 pm – 9:30 pm at the Brooklyn Museum.

Dozens of Brooklyn artisans will join the Brooklyn Museum’s monthly pop-up market to sell handmade art, jewelry, clothing and more. The February Market, held in celebration of Black History Month, will be organized in partnership with Urban Outfitters and showcase collections from designers including Ron Bass, Riverisville and Oswin Benjamin. The visit is free.

Sunday

Listen to the pianist’s concert for free

3:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. 82 Washington Square East

Hear Adam Tendler, lecturer at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, play the music of classical artists. Sergei Rachmaninoff and Morton Feldman. Tendler, a Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award winner, is a well-known pianist in the contemporary classical music scene. This performance is free and open to the public.

Work in the art lab at MoMA

from 11:00 to 17:00 at the Museum of Modern Art.

Unleash your creativity and test your artistic skills at MoMA’s Art Lab. Guests can experiment with art fundamentals such as lines and shapes in a practical space. Other activities allow attendees to work with wire, draw, and try their hand at emoji design. This ongoing event is included in the price of admission to the museum, which starts at $25 for the general public or $14 for students.
