These are the Nepo kids from San Francisco.

English

From old money to venture capital, from inherited skills to dubious talent, San Francisco is full of next-generation heirs, investors, influencers and politicians who grew up in their chosen field – the kids of Bay Area nepotism.

“Nep kids” have become the talk of the town lately after a viral article in Vulture Magazine exposed some new Hollywood stars and starlets as descendants of well-connected stars.

While nepotism is alive and well in the San Francisco Bay Area, urban nepotist kids look a little different than the lists circulating in Hollywood. In science fiction, politics, media, and business, it’s often a big, old family affair.

Dynasties such as Aliotos, Gettys and Pelosis learned how to turn family wealth, know-how and knowing “who” into a successful public career. And as the tech industry raises a new generation of illegitimate children, the heirs of Meta, Google and Twitter can keep the business (and power) in the family if their parents hand over control of their companies.

Whether you love them, hate them, or love to hate them, here are the San Francisco kids you need to know.

Nancy Pelosi

Honorary Speaker of the House of Representatives

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi served as San Francisco’s congressional representative for nearly 36 years, but was herself an early Nepom cousin, the daughter of a congressman and mayor of Baltimore. While she no doubt forged her own path as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives and one of the most influential politicians of modern times, she received her early education in the treacherous world of politics through her family.

  • Christine Pelosi Daughter Nancy herself grew out of a forgetful child, becoming a political strategist, elected to the DNC, a presidential elector, and a rumored candidate for her mother’s seat in the House of Representatives.

Gordon Getty

Oil tycoon

The legendary Getty family pioneered liquid gold in the oil industry by founding the Getty Oil Company. This venture earned J. Paul Getty the title of richest living American in the 1950s, and his descendants lived in luxury even after his death. His son, Gordon Getty, a composer, sold his father’s business for $10.1 billion in 1986, and his family has recently made the news for their high-profile dynastic drama. The notorious “Getty Curse” allegedly haunts the family, though the descendants have gone on to lucrative careers in media, business and philanthropy.

Ivy Getty Artist, Model

  • J. Paul Getty’s great granddaughter, Ivy Love Getty, made a splash in the San Francisco fashion scene in 2021 when Fashion covered her glamorous fantasy wedding hosted by none other than Nancy Pelosi at City Hall. The heiress is now an artist and model, and has hung out with Hollywood’s biggest names like Anya Taylor-Joy, who was a bridesmaid at her wedding.

August and Nats Getty Designers and stylists, LGBTQ+ activists

  • The two Getty siblings are gaining popularity in the entertainment and fashion industries: both August and the Nats have clothing lines, with the latter Getty naming his lifestyle brand Strike Oil as a nod to his family business. Both are homosexuals, and Nats is married to well-known trans socialite and YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous.

Angela Alioto

Supervisory Board of the Federation Council

Since the 1960s, there has hardly been a year when a member of the Alioto family not hold political office in San Francisco. The first member of the family was Joseph L. Alioto, the 36th mayor of San Francisco. Alioto’s descendants and relatives are included in the legendary list of influential locals, and now helpless children, including numerous city guards. Angela is the daughter of a former mayor and she once chaired the Board of Supervisors as its president. She is now a civil rights and anti-discrimination lawyer.

Gavin Newsom

Governor of California

Newsom is the son of a state appeals court judge and a fourth-generation San Francisco native with ties to Stanford, the Pelosi family, and the Getty Oil Company. Newsom grew up in the Marina but retained strong ties to his family in San Francisco, starting first as a restaurateur and later as city inspector and mayor. Newsom’s father was a political heavyweight in San Francisco, but more importantly, one of Gordon Getty’s best friends—a connection that forged key connections with powerful Californians who helped the younger Newsom ascend to the state’s gubernatorial throne. Newsom’s list of legendary elites includes the Getties, the Guggenheims, the Pritzgers and the Fishers.

Tim Draper

venture capitalist

Dubbed “the scion of a dynasty of Silicon Valley investors,” billionaire Tim Draper has followed in his father’s footsteps to become a prominent venture capitalist whose portfolio includes everything from Tesla to Bitcoin to Theranos. Tim’s father, William Henry Draper III, is said to have taken his son to famous Silicon Valley cafes, introduced him to Yahoo executives, and laid the foundation for his future career. This is a family business: his children are also big venture capitalists.

Bob Fisher

gap chairman

Fisher is chairman and director of retail giant The Gap, Inc. from San Francisco. Although he worked his way up from store manager to company executive, it certainly helped that his parents co-founded The Gap in 1969. A collector like his mom and dad, Fisher was active in the local art scene, serving as a major benefactor and trustee of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His brother, John J. Fisher, also did well: he owns the Oakland A baseball team.

Neil Khosla

Startup founder

Prolific founder Neil Khosla is the son of Vinod Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist whose investment portfolio includes everything from software companies to DoorDash and Instacart. Vinod Khosla stated in 2012 that technology will replace 80% of doctors in the future, and his son Neil seems to have taken that advice to heart, successively co-founding numerous medical technology companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tucker Carlson

Right-wing political commentator

Right-wing media pundit Tucker Carlson was born in the Mission District but embraced a political ideal very different from his hometown roots. Carlson may have inherited his penchant for socializing from his father, who told him to consider journalism because “they’ll take anyone”. Carlson’s father was a former reporter and public relations professional who once ran for mayor of San Diego and eventually remarried an heiress with frozen lunch fortunes.

Steph Curry

NBA point guard

While he is undoubtedly a uniquely talented megastar in his own right, Golden State Warriors point guard and three-point shooting king Steph Curry was born into an NBA family. His father, Dell Curry, played basketball with the Charlotte Hornets, and Steph spent his childhood training with his younger brother, Seth, now an NBA star.

Clay Thompson

NBA shooting guard

Like his teammate Steph, shooting guard Klay Thompson is the son of NBA star Michael Thompson. Clay’s father was selected first in the 1978 NBA draft and played for the Los Angeles Lakers for a long time. With two NBA championships under his belt, Thompson’s father cast a long shadow over Clay, who went on to break his father’s record of winning four championships with the Warriors and becoming one of the best shooters in league history. Clay’s mother was also a college athlete who played volleyball, as was Steph Curry’s mother.

Summer Tompkins Walker

Bay Area Socialite

Socialites are a special breed of forgetful children: their careers tend to depend on their family name, wealth, and the connections they share with other elites. Summer Tompkins Walker is no exception. Her mother is one of Hillary Clinton’s best friends, and her parents co-founded North Face and Esprit. But Tompkins Walker may have a grudge against her late father: Tompkins Walker unsuccessfully tried to sue her father’s estate after he excluded his children from his will and donated his land to national parks in Chile and Argentina.

Stella Santana

Musician

The daughter of San Francisco native and icon Carlos Santana, Stella Santana followed in her father’s footsteps to become an R&B vocalist, producer and songwriter. Megan Allison

Director and producer

Ellison is the daughter of Oracle CEO and co-founder Larry Ellison. She grew up in Boogie Atherton, California. Meghan founded Annapurna Pictures, a production company that takes a “Silicon Valley style” approach to filmmaking by investing heavily in risky films. original scripts. Her production credits include Zero Dark Thirties and Wound locker.

Austin Hills Jr.

Local coffee Scion

It seems odd to include Hills on this list as he hasn’t really achieved much in the local political scene. But his attempt last fall to run for district attorney has left some bewildered, especially because Hills didn’t realize he needed to be a lawyer to qualify. He is a descendant of the historic Hills Bros. coffee dynasty that settled in San Francisco in the 1800s.
