There was a moment of silence in memory of Daniel Rodriguez-Lopez, who was shot dead at the DeSoto County Fair.

DESOTO, Florida. Things looked different at the DeSoto County Fair tonight—not as crowded as the night before, along with a heightened police presence. Just the silence in the area was enough loud message.

A moment of silence was dedicated to Daniel Rodriguez-Lopez, a 17-year-old who was recently killed after investigators said someone shot him at a fair.

Early Tuesday morning, Daniel’s family spoke out publicly for the first time. Daniel’s grandmother, Delia Noyolla says [translated from Spanish to English]“What happens if they don’t catch these kids? What other family is going through what we’re going through right now?”

Noyolla remembers her grandson Daniel as a sweet and gentle man with the harsh reality that she will never be able to hug him again. She demands that something be done so that it doesn’t happen again. [translation] “Like a fair… more safety, more safety in our schools.” Daniel’s family believes that this could have been avoided if sufficient preventive measures had been taken from the outset.

The law enforcement presence has become more visible, with many families who spoke to Fox 4 today, both on and off camera, saying they felt neither safe nor in danger. There were more police than visitors to the fair and even those who worked at the fair.

The law enforcement presence will remain at the fairgrounds until Saturday. No arrests have been made against the suspect who shot Daniel Rodriguez-Lopez. This is an ongoing investigation.

A young CPR man who tried to save a 17-year-old’s life told us off-camera that he brought candles for the memorial, and you can see them on the Daniel Rodriguez-Lopez memorial grounds.
