There are too many dogs in Hawaii that need a home. Fly back to San Francisco with one

Looking to pick up your dog on your way back from Hawaii? Berkeley Humane East Bay Animal Shelter is looking for dog-loving travelers to help move dogs in crowded animal shelters from Kona on the Big Island to the mainland this spring.

The effort, called the Aloha Dog Project, connects puppies in need of a home with tourists and business travelers flying to the Bay Area who can serve as travel companions for dogs. The program aims to relieve overcrowding at a small public animal shelter in Kona by helping stray and abandoned dogs find new homes. Vodka is also involved, but not in the way you might think.

The project is sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, which bills itself as “dog-friendly” alcohol and recently awarded Berkeley Humane a $50,000 grant to expand the project. The dough covers travel preparation and medical expenses for dogs, including vaccinations, spaying and neutering, and microchipping.

While the program covers the transportation of dogs, people must pay for their own transportation, so this program requires volunteers who have already traveled from Hawaii to the bay. But having a fabulously furry companion on your next flight can be a priceless and enjoyable experience.

Travelers flying direct from Kona with Alaska Airlines are eligible and interested persons can register on this form.
