The Stony Point Boys basketball team is looking forward to the playoffs after a 28-1 season.

On Monday, February 13, the Texas Girls Basketball Playoffs kick off. First round games have begun for Austin High State, Pflugerville and Hendrickson.

The boys tournament starts next week and the Stony Point boys are having the best season of their lives.

Antoine Thompson, first-year head coach for the Stony Point basketball team, says he’s always ready to go when he hits the court.

“The way you train is the way we play. So my energy right now. The competitiveness we put into our training is who I am in the game,” said Antoine Thompson.

“He pushes you to the limit, but that’s what’s so great about him. I think he is the best coach in Central Texas,” said Stony Point Jr. Josiah Moseley.

“Our coach really pushed us to get where we are right now. His defense makes us work harder. He’s usually always involved in the game and everything, trying to help us win,” said Uzzia Bantin, defenseman at Stony Point.

The Tigers have won a lot this season. They are 28-1 overall, 13-0 in the district, and are the fourth state team in the 6A class.

That’s not bad for a program that has only won two playoff games in its school’s history.

“We tell these boys all the time that the county win is the minimum, what matters is what we do beyond that,” Thompson said.

“The first day here, I said we were going to win the state title, and I’m true to that. I really believe in it,” said Marcus Saunders, assistant basketball coach for the Stony Point Boys.

“We all came in with the thought that we could be better. We care more about each other outside of basketball and that’s why we’re great,” said Paul Buntin, Stony Point Boys assistant basketball coach.

While Coach Thompson and his team are doing well here at Stony Point, many expected him to do it in LBJ. He spent five years under longtime Jags head coach Freddie Roland, but that didn’t happen when he retired.

“Did I want to take a seat in LBJ? It was my time there. I think my time there is up, but I think this is the opportunity I needed. It was the refresher I needed,” Thompson said.

“I have always strived to get the best out of every student athlete I have. It’s just who I am because of my basketball experience. Thanks to my basketball culture. My coaching philosophy is based on tough love,” added Thompson.
