The Spirit Airlines plane landed safely after the crew reported a battery fire in the luggage compartment.

(CNN) — A Spirit Airlines flight was diverted and landed safely in Jacksonville, Fla., on Wednesday after the crew said a battery in the luggage compartment had caught fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating an incident involving an Airbus A320 that took off from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and was bound for Orlando International Airport.

“Spirit Airlines Flight 259 landed safely at Jacksonville International Airport around 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, after the crew reported a battery fire in the baggage hold,” an FAA spokesman told CNN.

According to a statement released by a spokesman for Spirit Airlines, the battery fire is believed to have been caused by a guest item in the luggage compartment. The fire was extinguished in flight.

“The aircraft landed at JAX and taxied to the terminal without incident,” the statement said. “We thank our crew and guests for their swift action to ensure the safety of everyone on board, and we thank the first responders for meeting the aircraft.”

According to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Captain Eric Prosswimmer, ten people were removed from the flight after the emergency services landed.

The JFRD transported “both passengers and crew members”, all in safe living conditions. The captain said he “could not go into more detail about their condition or treatment.”

Among the passengers on board was Joseph Fleck, who told CNN he was traveling with his wife and two children to Orlando to visit Disney World.

“Someone yelled ‘fire’ and I looked up and saw that the cabin was filling with smoke very quickly,” Fleck told CNN. “Several passengers jumped up to open the overhead luggage rack and saw a backpack on fire due to a battery that was charging a mobile phone. It actually exploded.”

Fleck recorded video of firefighters boarding the plane and inspecting the luggage rack. He also shared an image of a smoky cabin.

According to Fleck, the plane descended quickly before landing in Jacksonville.

“The smell was terrible and it was very difficult for him to breathe,” he said, adding that his children were emotional but relieved as soon as they got off the plane. “I coughed heavily for a good two hours after that.”

Spirit Airlines didn’t have a plane for passengers affected by the diversion, he said, so the family continued on to Orlando on an Uber that cost $250.
