The New Mexico State Senate approves a landmark bill that would create recurring funds for conservation projects.

The measure, which will provide continued funding for land and water conservation projects in New Mexico, was approved by the state Senate on Tuesday, and supporters called it a major measure that will help the state fight drought, wildfires and floods.

The bipartisan bill will now go to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The measure was supported by Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujean Grisham, who proposed as part of her budget recommendations funding for existing programs to protect urban and rural water supplies and support the local economy, which is tied to nature and natural resources.

“The Land of Enchantment Legacy Fund will provide lasting protection to New Mexico’s beloved lands and waters, and I applaud the Senate for taking this step toward its creation,” the Governor said in a statement.

The bill’s sponsors hope to raise at least $150 million for the initiative, including $100 million to create a “legacy preservation” trust. The remaining $50 million will provide initial annual payments for at least five years. Proceeds will help fund reforestation, agricultural projects, river conservation, wildlife conservation, and the development of the state’s outdoor recreation infrastructure.
