The HISD board voted to keep Jack Yates as director after she was relieved of her position in December.

HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District voted to retain the principal, who was recently relieved of his duties.

School officials announced the decision late Thursday evening during a board meeting.

Principal Tiffany Guillory will effectively retain her position at Jack Yates High School despite an earlier decision to fire her due to a “staffing issue.”

Guillory has been with the county for two decades and has held the title since 2018.

After the announcement of her departure back in December, the students themselves took to social networks and even planned to go on strike to protest against this decision. The campus fire alarm was turned off the next day, apparently as part of this plan.

Noted Yeats Alum, American journalist Roland Martin, who says he has donated thousands of dollars to a high school communications program, has demanded that Guillory remain in the post.

“Many people would like to have my money, but I prefer to leave it in HISD,” said Martin. “If you take that step and fire her, you’re making a big mistake.”

The board ultimately voted 6–3 to keep Guillory in office. It is not yet clear when exactly she will officially resume her role.
