The fundraiser for an 80-year-old North Texas janitor who had to retire topped $160,000.

Donations continue to pour in for the Kallisburg High School janitor after students at the school learned he needed to retire to get a job.

The GoFundMe for the 80-year-old janitor known to students as Mr. James has raised over $160,000 in the week since it was posted.

PREVIOUS COATING: A rent increase forced an 80-year-old retiree to take a job as a janitor, now strangers have raised $28,000 for him.

Mr. James started working at the school in January after his rent was increased by about $400 a month and he couldn’t make ends meet.

Three students heard the story of their new janitor and decided to start a fundraising campaign called “Get Mr. James out of this school”.

The teens set an initial goal of $10,000, which they quickly surpassed.

“When we told him, he was like, ‘Damn, it’s all right!

“No one deserves to work their whole life. They deserve to enjoy everything,” said student Grayson Thurman, who posted the ad campaign.

FOX 4 asked Mr. James for an interview. He refused, but did not mind having his story told to others.

Callisburg ISD confirms that as of Wednesday, Mr. James is still with the county and has not yet told them about the layoff.
