The effects of the storm are still affecting residents of the Felton area.

FELTON, CALIFORNIA. (KION-TV) — New Year’s Eve brings clear skies to people in the Felton area, but things were very different the day before.

A storm that hit the Santa Cruz Mountains caused the water to rise so high that people were forced to evacuate. The next day, landslides, downed trees, and even sinkholes create problems for people living there, like Dylan Bounds.

“You need food or water,” Bounds said. “If you are not ready for it, then you just have to do what you have to do. Drive a couple of hours up and over the top of the mountain to come down and get everything you need.”

Due to the extensive damage done to the Santa Cruz Mountains, the roads between Highway 9 North and South were closed.

For those traveling to Felton, this makes things a little more difficult. Especially for parents like Bounds who need baby products.

“In particular, my wife is also pregnant right now,” Bounds said. “And then my daughter turned 14 months old and she ran out of milk last night. And so we’re like, well, we have to leave first thing in the morning. And it took us from North Boulder, which is two hours away, to get here to Felton. It’s usually a 15 minute drive for us.”

Caltrans is one of several agencies reviewing the aftermath of the hurricane. Caltrans District 5 Public Information Officer Kevin Drabinsky explains how the community is helping their efforts.

“The community has an important and important role to play in keeping us informed about the condition of the roads,” Drabinski said.

Bounds explains how he prepares for situations like yesterday’s storm.

“I have a chainsaw and gas in my truck in case I run into a situation like today where the guys are working with wood and they run out of gas,” Bounds said. So I had a little.

Cal-Trans said that even though debris and trees appear to be clear of Highway 9, their Geo-Tech teams must safely clear nearby hills for the public to drive through.
