The company said that the driver of the Cap Metro bus received a stray bullet

A Capital Metro bus driver was shot and killed around 2:40 a.m. Sunday in southeast Austin in what the bus company believes was a stray bullet.

A Cap Metro spokesman says it happened on the driver’s route near Riverside and Burton.

The driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

There were two other passengers on board at the time. Fortunately, they weren’t hurt.

Cap Metro does not believe that his bus was the intended target, instead it appears to have been the result of an altercation between two other vehicles.

Austin police are investigating.

“We are very lucky and grateful that our operator is doing well this morning after this horrific ordeal. Our team contacted him, and now he is resting at home, ”said Cap Metro. “We can’t stress enough the important role our team plays in our community, but our employees deserve to feel safe at work.”
