The city will open short-term shelters for the population during bad weather

On March 2, the City of Austin will extend opening hours for dozens of parks, recreation areas and public libraries to help anyone who needs a safe place to ride out an expected thunderstorm.

A total of 20 recreation centers and four public libraries will remain open until 10 p.m., by which time the worst storm is forecast to pass Austin.

The National Weather Service issued a severe weather warning for much of central Texas, including Austin, on Thursday evening. Risks include damaging winds gusting up to 60 mph, heavy hail and possible isolated tornadoes.

The strongest effects of the hurricane are expected to be felt in Austin from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
