The child is now in the care of relatives after surviving an accident that killed her parents.

ARCADIA, Florida. The tragedy occurred on SE Airport Road in Arcadia, when two parents were carrying their six-year-old daughter in a van and got hit by a car.

The parents, Kimberly and Jay Hartley, were killed around 7:45 pm Wednesday night.

Their daughter Sienna survived without any injuries and is now in the care of Kimberly’s half-sister, April Edwards.

Edwards spoke to Fox 4 about the moment she realized she would never see her stepsister again and the phone call that led to Sienna showing up at her front door.

“I got a call that I didn’t want, that’s pretty much what it is… I didn’t want that call. Then her daughter shows up on my doorstep around 2:30 at night,” Edwards said.

On Thursday, Lieutenant Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol told Fox 4 about the accident.

“By the grace of God, the little six-year-old is still with us,” Bueno said.

Bueno is urging people who walk in dark places like Airport Road to use the lights and never cross the road unless they know the driver has made eye contact with them.

The FHP report says the driver was a 25-year-old woman to whom Edwards has a message.

“Most of all, I want to thank her for stopping by and getting help as quickly as she could,” Edwards said.

Now Edwards is tasked with making sure Sienna always has a family to return to.

“If that means I have to take her, build an extra room in my house, buy another house, I don’t care. I’ll deal with it. If there is a will, there is a way,” Edwards said.

Anyone who would like to help arrange for Kimberly and Jay’s funeral can visit the family’s Go-Fund-Me website.
