LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – What is smothered and covered in kindness is a friend helping a friend.

An 8-year-old regular at the star-studded Little Rock Waffle House makes friends with his favorite waiter and friend.

“I really enjoy working at Waffle House, you know, meeting new people every day and making their day,” said Waffle House server Devonte Gardner.

She explained that this is her goal when she shows up for work.

“I come with a positive attitude. I have a positive attitude towards everyone. I like it when everyone smiles,” she added.

Gardner did just that with one of her regulars, 8-year-old Kaizen Hunter.

“Devonte is just a really nice guy. Really nice guy. Very nice to everyone he meets,” Kaizen said.

Though Devonte Gardner’s big smile hid an even bigger struggle.

“Right now I’m working on getting the car working and being able to, you know, get my daughters out of the hotel we’re currently staying at,” Gardner explained.

He added that he moved out of his apartment after his daughters got mold. They temporarily stayed at the hotel, but the costs continued to rise.

“All my advice and everything I receive goes straight to my children. I pay for a room every day. I pay $60 a day and it just eats my pocket alive,” she said.

Gardner’s story inspired Kaizen to create GoFundMe to help him pay for his car and rent.

“It’s just a blessing. You know, I always count my blessings, always. Thank you. Everything they give me. So… it almost made me cry,” Gardner described.

Kaizen said she was happy to help her new friend.

“Honestly, it’s great,” Kaizen added.

Kaizen’s father, Corey Hunter, said that Kaizen is always thinking about other people and it was nice to see him show up at such a young age.

“Kaizen, you know he doesn’t want anything in return. He just wants other people to pay for it,” Hunter said.

She hopes to be an example for other people, regardless of their age.

“It’s nice to help someone else,” Kaizen said.
