Texas Vista Medical Center announces financial closure

The closure was confirmed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who said the hospital would close in almost 40 years.

SAN ANTONIO. A hospital in the southwest has announced the closure of its doors. Texas Vista Medical Center is located at 7400 Barlit Boulevard, near I-35 and S. Zarzamora Street.

The closure was announced on Business Wire on Wednesday. According to a hospital statement, “Using limited resources, TVMC supports patient groups with limited income and high needs. Nearly a quarter of hospital patients cannot and do not pay for services provided by the hospital.”

The closure was confirmed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who said the Texas Vista Medical Center would close in nearly 40 years.

“Any loss of access to healthcare, especially in underserved parts of our community, is a concern. The announced hospital closures are a loss to the Southside and our city as a whole,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “While the City of San Antonio does not own or operate hospitals, local hospital leaders such as UHS have told us they will be meeting to discuss the implications of this development and the best approaches to ensure that all San Antonio residents have access, they deserve.”

We reached out to District Judge Peter Sakai, who said the following:

“The county is aware that Texas Vista Medical Center is closing, and we will be monitoring the situation to ensure that the medical needs of all of its patients are being met with dignity and respect,” Sakai said. “We will participate in all meetings related to this development to help with the transition. I have reached out to University of Health leadership and other public health partners to help coordinate the referral of more than 175 patients who will be directly affected by the closure. , as well as 842 employees who work there. The Bexar County and University Health System is in the process of building a new hospital to better serve the needs of Southside residents, and we are committed to investing in hospital facilities in underserved areas of our community. Please direct any additional questions to University Health.”

Council member Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia released this statement in connection with the announced closure:

“It’s sad to hear about the closure of a local health facility, and equally worrisome is the devastating impact this will have on our residents living in southwest San Antonio. More than a quarter of District 4 residents are uninsured and struggling to get the health care they need, so this closure will only exacerbate widespread health inequalities. I am also concerned about the loss of 800 jobs and the economic impact of this closure.

“I am committed to working with the Board and leaders of our regional hospital systems to help meet the health needs of our most vulnerable residents and look forward to discussing access to healthcare and employment in the healthcare industry at the upcoming Community Health, Environment conference. and the Cultural Committee, and to identify potential assistance options for residents who may be affected by this closure and need medical care and employment close to their homes.”

The 325-bed medical facility will close on May 1.
