Texas Republican Senator Says School Choices Grow

State Senator Brandon Creighton says reaching out to rural Republicans is working.

TEXAS, USA. Efforts to expand school choice for Texan parents seem to be gaining support in Austin, whether it’s education vouchers or savings accounts.

State Republican Senator Brandon Creighton says that instead of issues being raised by state regents or some coalitions, the Texas Capitol is being flooded with statewide sentiment.

“It’s got a lot of support without a doubt, and I think it’s just different from what it used to be,” Republican Conroe told us on Inside Texas Politics.

The idea behind School Choice is that Texas parents can use tax dollars to send their children to schools outside of public education, such as private or charter schools.

Democrats and rural Republicans have long joined forces to fight these efforts, arguing that doing so would steal too much money from public schools, thereby weakening them.

But Creighton says school-choice advocates are hard at work behind the scenes to change the minds of rural Republicans, and he says momentum is building there, too.

“This is a new day for how we look at education in Texas in the future,” the senator said. “It really surprised me that a lot of these hard lines and narratives, we broke down a lot of barriers on this particular topic and a lot of people are coming to a table that wasn’t at the table before.”
