Texas Man Arrested with Gun and Ski Mask During Traffic Stop in Florida Keys

A traffic stop in the Florida Keys led to the arrest of a Texas man on multiple charges, as law enforcement officers discovered a gun, ski mask, and gloves in his vehicle. Hector Portillo, a 30-year-old resident of Richmond, Texas, was apprehended early Friday morning. He now faces charges including altering or removing a firearm serial number, illegal concealed carry of a firearm, theft, reckless driving, and driving with a stolen vehicle tag.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Adam Lindhardt, revealed that deputies had pulled over Portillo on U.S. Highway 1 after observing him driving recklessly and violating traffic laws. Lindhardt disclosed that Portillo had been traveling at a speed of 81 mph in a 55-mph zone. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered that the attached Arizona license tag on the vehicle had been reported stolen. Additionally, they found a scratched-off serial number on the gun, along with a black ski mask and black gloves inside the car.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay commended the deputies involved in the traffic stop, emphasizing the significance of the case. He stated, “This case is a great example of how a seemingly routine traffic stop can lead to a serious criminal being taken where he needs to be — jail.” Ramsay further praised the deputies for their effective actions in removing a dangerous individual from the streets and confiscating an illegal firearm.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from routine traffic stops. Law enforcement officers must remain vigilant and exercise caution during these encounters, as they have the potential to uncover more serious criminal activity. This particular incident highlights the importance of thorough investigations and the role they play in ensuring public safety.

As the legal proceedings continue, Portillo remains in custody, awaiting his day in court. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and other relevant authorities will work diligently to ensure that justice is served in this case. The apprehension of Portillo serves as a testament to the dedication and commitment of law enforcement officers in their mission to protect and serve the community.
