Officials say section 11.35 of the Internal Revenue Code allows the chief appraiser to determine whether a property qualifies for a temporary exemption based on a damage assessment rating of I, II, III, or IV.

In order to be entitled to the property, damage must be done, which is at least 15% of the value of the property improvement. The amount of the exemption is determined by multiplying the value of the property improvement after the appraisal rating has been applied by the fraction consisting of the days remaining in the tax year after the governor declared the disaster, divided by 365.
