Texas Central Food Bank provides 500 households with food in response to increased needs

On Monday evening, the Texas Central Food Bank held an emergency food distribution due to increased demand due to the ice storm.

One East Austin resident who walked through the line said that with pay cuts and spoiled food in the fridge, he needed food to provide for his family for the rest of the week.

“The freeze destroyed all the food in the fridge,” said East Austin resident Robert Broussard. “Freeze shut down my work site.”

Broussard said he was without power for five days, but it finally came back on Sunday and he is trying to move forward. He is one of hundreds lined up around the Delco business center in East Austin to pick up food from the Central Texas food bank.

“We know that people needed help before the ice storm, so having lost food due to electricity, possibly incurring additional costs due to fallen trees, damage to the house, we want to make sure that families have what they need” , — Central Texas. This was stated by President and CEO of Food Bank Sari Watske.

About 20 volunteers removed pallets of food from trucks, laid lanes for cars, helped direct traffic and placed food in the trunks of hundreds of cars.

Watske said they deliberately chose the food to distribute knowing that some people are still without electricity, so no electricity is needed to cook food.

“We want to make sure people have access to food when there is no electricity,” Watske said.

“Thank you from all of us, because if it wasn’t for this, we’d be fighting for the next few weeks,” Broussard said.
