Texas Central Food Bank Opens New Grocery Pantry in South Austin

The Central Food Bank of Texas recently opened a new pantry on its South Austin campus as the need for food in the area increases.

FOX 7 Austin got to know the new establishment, which features both fresh produce from its own garden and long-term storage products.

“It should be a resource, a one-stop-shop for families in need who come for benefits. We want to make sure they have a decent shopping experience, access to fresh and healthy produce, some of which is grown properly. here in our own garden,” said President and CEO Sari Watske.

The storage room is located at 6500 Metropolis Drive. It is open from 9:00 to 16:30 from Monday to Friday.

This is just one of many initiatives the food bank is launching to help end hunger in central Texas. The organization also provides services to help people with SNAP benefits and other government assistance programs. The Benefits and Emergency Services Group of the Texas Central Food Bank is dedicated to helping people understand what they are entitled to. For help, call 855-366-3401.

Federal food aid is due to decrease in March. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress increased the cost of SNAP benefits for families in need. These families could lose 50% of their SNAP benefits next month.

The Texas Central Food Bank also offers a culinary training program to help those interested in finding jobs in the food industry. For 12 weeks, people can explore culinary skills and professional development in all aspects of restaurant operation to renew their creativity. Classes begin March 6, 2023.
