Tesla recalls 3,470 Model Y cars made last year after finding loose bolts

Tesla announced the recall 3470 model Y cars in the United States after learning that the bolts holding the second row seatback frames could be loosened.

A statement released publicly on Saturday showed the manufacturer filed a recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Monday. Potentially affected vehicles were manufactured between May 23, 2022 and February 5, 2023.

The NHTSA said that loose seat frame bolts could reduce the effectiveness of the seat belt system, leading to an increased risk of injury during a crash.

Tesla said in a statement that the second-row seatback frames are attached to the lower seat frame with four bolts per seatback, and one or more of the bolts “may not have been tightened to specifications.”

IN recall report, Tesla has said the problem can be detected if the second-row seatbacks don’t fold down properly or if they rattle during normal operation.

Customers of affected models can take their vehicles to a Tesla store or service center for a free inspection. Tesla said it will inspect the bolts securing the driver and passenger side second-row seatback frames and tighten them to specification if necessary.

As of Feb. 23, the manufacturer has identified five warranty claims received between Dec. 9 and Feb. 14, stating the conditions associated with the recall.

After the initial announcement in early December, Tesla said it had implemented improved process controls and improved training and control to ensure bolts are torqued to specification going forward.

Tesla has stated that it is not aware of any injuries or deaths that may be related to this issue.

Tesla stores and service centers across the country have been notified of the recall effective February 28.

Owner Notification Letters will also be mailed on April 25, 2023.
