Teens apprehended with loaded firearms in Deerfield Beach High School parking lot

Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested and are facing criminal charges after being found in possession of firearms on school grounds at Deerfield Beach High School, as announced by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Carey Codd, a spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place on Monday around 2 p.m. A security specialist from Broward County Public Schools noticed an individual asleep in a running car in the school’s parking lot. The security specialist immediately contacted her supervisor, who proceeded to search the car. During the search, a handgun was discovered inside a backpack. Without delay, the supervisor contacted the BSO school resource deputy.

An investigation conducted by BSO deputies revealed that the vehicle contained not only one, but two loaded handguns, along with several loaded magazines, a drum magazine, and illegal narcotics, including MDMA, mushrooms, and cannabis. As a precautionary measure, the school was placed on lockdown.

It has been disclosed that one of the teenagers attends Deerfield Beach High School, while the other teenager, who was found asleep in the car, is not a student of the school. Both individuals were promptly arrested and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

The charges they are facing include possession of a weapon on school property, possession of MDMA, and possession with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver THC. The seriousness of their actions cannot be overstated, as possessing firearms and illegal substances on school grounds poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine how the teenagers obtained the firearms and whether they had any intention of using them. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a secure and vigilant environment within educational institutions, and the need for continued efforts to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has commended the prompt actions of the school security specialist and her supervisor, as their vigilance and quick response played a crucial role in preventing a potentially dangerous situation. The school district will also be reviewing its security protocols to identify any areas that may need improvement to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
