Suspect in Pelosi Attack Reportedly Carried Zip Ties, Recalling Jan. 6 Capitol Attack

The violent attack Friday on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, has raised questions about increasing political violence in America as details about the alleged assailant and the assault itself continue to emerge.

Here’s the latest:

Zip Ties: An ‘Echo’ of Jan. 6

In what the Associated Press dubbed a “Jan. 6 echo,” the alleged attacker is reported to have been carrying zip ties, which he may have planned to use to restrain his intended victim, who, by all accounts, was Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

The man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband carried zip ties with him when he broke into the couple’s San Francisco home, according to a person briefed on the investigation,” the AP reported.

Rumor Mongering Musk

Just three days after his acquisition of San Francisco-based Twitter was finalized, Elon Musk proved to his critics why he is not the man to run the social media platform.

In a since-deleted tweet, Musk shared a link to an article in an outlet called The Santa Monica Observer, which speculated that Paul Pelosi knew his attacker.

The Third Man?

Elon Musk was not the only one to broadcast unverified information. Chuck Todd, host of the influential Sunday political talk show, “Meet the Press,” asked Tom Winter, an NBC News investigative correspondent, whether there was a third unidentified individual in the Pelosi residence at the time police arrived. At present, it remains unclear whether there is any truth to this.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott gave an update to reporters on Friday, which could be interpreted as indicating that someone other than Paul Pelosi or the alleged attacker, David DePape, opened the door to the home. It could also just be a misunderstanding of Scott’s phrasing.

“When the officers arrived and knocked on the front door of the residence this morning, the door was opened by someone inside and the officers observed through the open door Mr. Pelosi and the suspect, Mr. DePape, inside the door of the home,” Scott said.

Hammer-Weilding Attacker

The man believed to be responsible for the attack, David DePepe, is facing a charge of attempted murder. The Standard spoke with his daughter on Friday.

DePape’s Ex

Oxane Taub, who goes by the first name “Gypsy,” and is currently serving time at the Californian Institution For Women in Corona, California, spoke to local television outlet ABC 7 about her former partner. Taub told ABC 7 that DePape is “mentally ill.”

The 911 Call

San Francisco police were alerted to the incident by a 911 call placed by Paul Pelosi. SF Police Chief Bill Scott credited the 911 dispatcher who answered the call for acting fast and getting police to the scene quickly.
