Suspect in Custody Following Shooting of 19-Year-Old in Bunnell

A man apprehended in Putnam County last Friday stands accused of perpetrating a shooting incident in Bunnell the previous week, resulting in severe injuries to a 19-year-old individual, as per law enforcement officials. Antarius Henderson, aged 23, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to a press release from the Bunnell Police Department.

The violent episode unfolded late on March 16 within a neighborhood known as “South Bunnell,” an area that had seen the installation of an enhanced network of pole cameras following two drive-by shootings in 2022. These surveillance tools, alongside additional cameras owned by the Flagler County Housing Authority, not only captured the shooting but also aided investigators in tracing a Mercedes-Benz that fled the scene, proving to be invaluable in the ensuing investigation.

Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon praised the efficacy of technology in crime-solving, commending the city officials for funding the video cameras that significantly contributed to resolving the challenging case. The footage revealed three assailants taking turns to discharge firearms during the altercation, which initiated as a scuffle between two men at the intersection of East Drain Street and Hymon Circle, escalating when Henderson, purportedly the altercation’s loser, retrieved a handgun from the Mercedes-Benz and opened fire.

Despite the victim’s attempts to seek refuge by running towards a nearby residence, he sustained two gunshot wounds, prompting the occupants to render aid and alert emergency services. Notably, the victim was not the initial combatant engaged with Henderson, who found himself exchanging gunfire with another individual before a third party joined the fray, intensifying the violence. Subsequent investigations, involving multiple search warrants and interviews, culminated in Henderson’s arrest at a motel in the Palatka area.

The victim, airlifted to a medical facility with critical injuries, underwent multiple surgeries, including the removal of a kidney. Collaborative efforts between detectives from various law enforcement agencies led to the apprehension of Henderson, who is presently in custody at the Putnam County jail. As the case continues to unfold, further charges are anticipated, underscoring the ongoing nature of the investigation. Individuals possessing relevant information are urged to contact the authorities or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida to assist in the inquiry.
