Trenton, NJ – In a recent incident on Friday, January 12th, 2024, the Trenton Police Department responded to a call regarding a disorderly group of males engaging in gambling activities and potentially carrying a handgun at 802 Southard Street. According to Detective Lieutenant Brian Jones, patrol units promptly arrived at the scene at approximately 5:29 p.m. to investigate the matter further and issue Violation of City ordinance summons for gambling.
Upon their arrival, officers encountered a group of about eight males in the hallway. As they approached to conduct their investigation, one individual, identified as Nasir Reed, 24, of 157 Rossell Avenue Trenton NJ, refused to comply with lawful commands. Reed subsequently fled from the officers, initiating a foot pursuit and resisting arrest in the process. During the struggle, it was discovered that Reed was in possession of a handgun, which accidentally discharged and caused a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left upper thigh. Reed received immediate medical attention and was later released from the hospital. He is now facing charges of resisting arrest and weapons offenses. The Mercer County Shooting Response Team is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Earlier in the day, on January 12, 2024, emergency personnel and city firefighters from Engine 1, along with Trenton police, Trenton Emergency Medical Service personnel, and Capital Health System paramedics, were dispatched to the 900 block of Southard Street. The dispatch was in response to a gunshot victim in that area, located between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and New Willow Street. The details surrounding this incident remain undisclosed.
