Suspect Arrested for Marlboro New Year’s Day Murder

Freehold, January 5, 2024 – The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office has announced the arrest of Carl A. Richards, a resident of Marlboro, in connection with a homicide that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day. According to Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, Richards has been charged with first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter.

The incident took place at approximately 12:49 a.m. on January 1, 2024, when the Marlboro Township Police Department responded to a residence on Texas Road in the Morganville section of Marlboro Township. They received an urgent request for medical attention for a male who had been assaulted at that location. Upon arrival, the victim, identified as George L. Mott III, 64, was found unresponsive with severe trauma to his head, face, and neck. Mott was immediately transported to Old Bridge Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m.

An extensive investigation conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office – Major Crimes Bureau and the Marlboro Township Police Department revealed that Carl A. Richards physically assaulted the victim following a verbal dispute, which ultimately resulted in his death. It was further discovered that both Mott and Richards resided at the same residence.

Carl A. Richards is currently being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court on Friday, January 5, 2024. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Caitlin J. Sidley of the Major Crimes Bureau. Richards is represented by Antonio J. Toto, Esq. of Monroe Township.

It is important to note that despite the charges against Richards, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a trial with all the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.

In an unrelated matter, authorities have released a photograph of a crime scene in Trenton. The image, captured by law enforcement, depicts an ongoing investigation. Further details regarding the incident have not been provided at this time.
