Surge in Boat Electronic Thefts at Deerfield Beach Marina

Deerfield Beach, Fla. – In response to a recent surge in boat electronic thefts, the owner of a Deerfield Beach marina and boat storage facility in Boca Raton, Marshall Sklar, has reached out to Contact 5 for assistance. Sklar expressed his concern about the growing problem, particularly in South Florida.

According to Sklar, both Mizner Marina in Deerfield Beach and his boat storage facility in Boca Raton have experienced an increase in electronic thefts. Although only a few boats have been targeted, two thefts have been successful.

Marshall Sklar, the owner, emphasized that the thieves are focused on one specific brand of electronics, namely Garmin. More specifically, they are after a specific Garmin electronics fish finder. This narrow focus has prompted Sklar to make significant changes at his marina.

One of the key changes implemented is the mandatory use of RFID chips for all customers to gain access to the marina, replacing the previously used coded system. Sklar also mentioned implementing a system called For Warn, which allows them to thoroughly screen everyone’s name and phone number.

Moreover, the marina has made substantial improvements in its surveillance system, installing 12 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras. This added security measure aims to deter potential thieves and provide evidence in case of any thefts.

To shed light on the new technologies used to combat thefts, Jason Gelfand, the owner of Complete Integrated Technologies, stressed the importance of increasing security measures and employing cutting-edge artificial intelligence. The new system allows for virtual motion detection and the ability to draw lines into the camera view to discern between humans and other objects.

This revolutionary technology has transformed security measures and promises a more proactive approach in preventing thefts. As businesses continue to invest in advanced surveillance systems, boat owners are also encouraged to take extra precautions.

Boca Raton police recommend several measures for individual boat owners, including installing a camera on their boat, covering their boat to conceal valuable items, and maintaining a detailed inventory of all boat electronics, complete with their serial numbers. Taking these steps can greatly increase the chances of recovering stolen items or providing important evidence.

Sklar, the marina owner, shared an additional tip for boat owners. He advised securing boat electronics with screws and utilizing quick disconnect mechanisms, which allow for swift removal of the electronics in less than 30 seconds. This simple precaution can prevent thefts during fishing trips.

With the collaborative efforts of marina owners, security technology experts, and law enforcement agencies, boating enthusiasts in South Florida can hope for an improved and secure environment for their vessels and valuable electronics. As electronic thefts continue to be a concern, vigilance, advanced security measures, and proactive steps are crucial in safeguarding boats and their electronic systems.
