Sunnyvale Charter School closes, more than 600 students affected

Hundreds of South Bay students will be looking for a new school to attend next fall as the Summit Public Schools board voted Thursday night to close the Denali campus in Sunnyvale.

The charter school serves over 600 middle and high school students across two campuses.

Denali officials have said they cannot afford to keep the school open after losing funding received during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The school projects a budget deficit of $4.5 million for the 2023-24 school year.

Summit Public Schools released a statement last week amid protests from parents and teachers: “Taken together, a particular series of financial problems has put Denali at a disadvantage. Denali is a wonderful school and while we don’t want to close Denali, we don’t see a viable way forward to stay open.”
